The annual Progress conference came at an incredibly important time this year. The first anniversary of the coalition government, the launch of the Labour party’s many policy reviews and the historic events in north Africa and the Middle East which will shape our foreign policy for years to come.

Opinion polls have shown that the British public do not know what David Cameron means by the ‘big society’. From confusion to apprehension, 63 per cent of people don’t know what it is and 68 per cent think that it probably won’t work.

The government’s proposed reforms to legal aid are so severe that, if enacted in their entirety, they would represent a major shift in the meaning of justice in the UK.
