When Labour took office in Southwark last May we inherited from the Liberal Democrat administration the highest level of childhood obesity in the UK. Over a quarter of our 10-11 year olds were obese – children from across the borough, from all financial backgrounds.

Media coverage of the Browne report has focused on the lifting of the cap on tuition fees, with some universities enabled to charge UK undergraduates £12000 a year or possibly more. But huge hikes in fees are not the best way to fund our higher education system. Instead, they will jeopardise a system which is envied around the world and which attracts many international students and staff.
