England is an ‘imagined community’ left unimagined by Labour. Labour must articulate a vision of England’s future or stop complaining when others put forward a vision with which it disagrees. It’s time to play to Little England.

David Cameron’s ‘big society’ concept continues to lumber on. A bit like the elusive ‘Third Way’, it appears to merely describe the actions (or inaction) of the current government.

The recent article by Jon Cruddas and myself has attracted both criticism and agreement, here and on other websites. As Anthony Painter argues, there is an important debate taking shape. So I’d like to expand on the original argument which is that Labour has to build its own conception of the ‘Good Society’ and the best way of achieving this is to recognise that the future is conservative.
