It is right that we take politics seriously. Ultimately, it can involve matters of life and death. But it is also important that those who practise the art of politics do not take themselves too seriously. This was a distinction that David Cairns understood and his recognition of it accounts for not simply the respect, but also the great affection, that he inspired in those who knew him.

With the current blizzard of constitutional legislation, from the referendum on AV to the impending bill on Lords reform, there is one glaring omission which is the one that should be top of the list.
