Rt Hon Jim Murphy MP, Secretary of State for Scotland, delivered the twelfth lecture in Progress’s ‘New thinking for Britain’s next decade’ series where he urged that the Labour Party must engage value voters – those with whom the ideas of faith, fairness, and family resonate – as the general election approaches. Murphy followed the speech with a conversation with the audience, discussing faith schools, tolerance, and a multi-faith society. He distinguished between governing in the name of faith and governing while respecting faith, stating that the latter is a healthy approach to creating positive secularism and tolerance.
