South Ribble is largely a rural seat consisting of two small towns and 15 villages. This makes the job of delivering essential campaign materials that bit harder. While our teams do a wonderful job pounding the pavements in all weathers, the Tories can rely on paid delivery services to get their message out much quicker. We focus our efforts village by village, but it takes time when delivering everything by hand. When faced with Ashcroft’s pot of money and seemingly endless paid delivery, it’s a real challenge.

The local Tories are using their cash to fund paid phone canvassing. They are putting their resources into targeting their core supporters. Whilst we are able to do some phone canvassing we can’t match the size of their operation. For years the Tories have used their cash mountain to send paid direct mail urging their supporters to apply for postal votes – they now have many thousands and we’re working hard to catch up. We’ve written to our supporters urging them to apply for postal votes but it’s expensive to post letters throughout our villages.

A recent four page glossy magazine-style leaflet received fantastic feedback, but it’s taken time to get it into the hands of our voters. We know why Labour represents the people of South Ribble, we know why the Tories are a change people in South Ribble can’t afford, but we can’t get the message across as quickly as them. We’re looking at more cost-effective ways to contact our supporters – we have a successful website and blog, and we send weekly email updates to over a thousand constituents.

Our fight relies on the hard work and dedication of a local army of volunteers and supporters. Our fantastic campaign headquarters is up and running and a hive of activity. With more funding we can concentrate on targeting our key message to key voters in key areas. A lot of people haven’t made up their minds and we are sure we can defeat the Tories once again.
