The results were as follows. David Miliband 50 per cent, Ed Balls 8 per cent, Diane Abbott 15 per cent, Andy Burnham 15 per cent and Ed Miliband 12 per cent. The results will be presented to our constituency members at the meeting Tuesday 20 July when we will be casting our votes.
We had an enlightening two hours in the Market Square where we were well received. We did not encounter the usual resistance, there seemed to be a genuine interest in what we were doing and the obviously Tory/Lib Dem supporters appeared to be rather subdued and a little defensive.
We had a very good turnout of our members but we were all put to shame by the enthusiasm, energy, commitment and charm of our 90 year old member,
Doris.
Some of us finished off the afternoon with the mandatory visit to a local hostelry.
Our thanks to all who participated.
Edna Forrest
It is crucial that we pick a leader that is palatable to the geneeral public. Whether Saffron Walden is a good barometer is questionnable, but congratulations to them for taking this initiative.
I am not sure if Julian Ware-Lane’s comment (above) is relevant: surely, all five candidates are ‘palatable’ to the general public.. I would think that Saffron Walden, – being a typical Essex rural market town (re: posh’/wealthy in the middle and suburbs, ..working class and poor around the edges…!) is as good a ‘barometer’ as any other town..?
