Banks should take their share of the burden

Just before Christmas I was at a conference where I met Larry Summers, former US treasury secretary and director of Obama’s National Economic Council. I asked him whether he believed that the economic policy of Britain’s coalition government would be successful. His reply was telling: ‘Either it will fail or else everything I know about economics will have turned out to be untrue’. There is a growing consensus that cuts at this speed and, when the economic recovery is so fragile, do not make good economic sense.
