London Young Labour is often assumed to be a veteran organisation, but until summer 2002, this stalwart had a bit of a quiet period. Several attempts to resurrect it had initial success, but were never followed through. Getting things started took a lot of work, fundraising to afford materials and working with the regional party to get publicity sent out.
It was fundamental to our success that we recognised that members hold different opinions and that this should be celebrated, not stamped out. By making the organisation inclusive and democratic, members felt ownership of the group. In turn, this has made London Young Labour a sustainable organisation, encouraging new members to get involved. It has also avoided the common problem that afflicts Young Labour groups of falling apart as soon as the executive changes. Only two out of thirteen officers elected this year were on the executive last year, but the group has continued to progress.
With the support of Unison, we’ve sent out a regular member-wide newsletter. Our events range from policy forums and debates with ministers to dinners and socials. Meanwhile, we organised campaigning in by-elections across London - sending activists to Brent East, Lewisham, Islington, Stockwell, Fulham and Hendon. And at annual conference in Bournemouth we even held our own reception, thanks to the support of the T&G.
