There are imminent Parliamentary by-elections in Leicester South and Birmingham Hodge Hill. Polling day will be July 15th, ten days away, and we need your help contacting voters on the ground in Birmingham and Leicester.

Campaign coaches are being organised from Westminster to Birmingham and Leicester and we are asking you to join one of these visits. Please contact us to make arrangements.

***LABOUR POLITICAL ASSISTANT WORKING FOR SIR ROBIN WALES, LONDON BOROUGH OF NEWHAM – SHORT TERM SECONDMENT***

Salary: Short term secondment preferred – in the region of £23,000pa equivalent

Located in East Ham, London.

Would you like a short term change of scene? Do you want to find out more about life with a directly elected Mayor? Sir Robin Wales needs the support of a political assistant on a temporary basis.

Sam Towler, the current postholder is being temporarily employed elsewhere in the Mayor’s office whilst undergoing treatment. We are looking for something like a six month secondment, but are prepared to discuss appropriate terms with current employers. Those currently working for MPs, for example, might want to consider a secondment covering the summer recess.

As political assistant your job will be to brief the mayor on important aspects of council business, and on the political implications of national and local developments. You will be a key link between the mayor, the large Labour group, and the local party.

You will need skills to enable you to produce written work for a wide range of audiences, including newsletters, reports, speeches and press briefings.

Labour party membership is essential. During your time in this post you will be restricted in external political activity by the 1989 Housing and Local Government Act. This means you would be prohibited from standing for election, being an elected party official or working in any way that includes canvassing/speaking in public/publishing work in a way intended to affect support for a political party.

***POLITICAL ADVISER TO THE LABOUR GROUP, LONDON BOROUGH OF TOWER HAMLETS***

As Political Adviser your work will directly assist the Labour Group to address the challenges they face. You must be committed to the Labour Group’s political aims and have excellent communication skills in dealing with Members and Officers of the Council, the media and the public.

You will be expected to co-ordinate and service meetings and undertake research, working on your own initiative and often under pressure. The Council has operated with a Cabinet style decision making structure since May, 1999 and you will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of, and commitment to, the Government’s modernising agenda.

Ian McCartney MP/Neil Turner MP/Andy Burnham MP have adjoining constituencies in the Borough of Wigan and are looking for an assistant to take a lead role in local community activities in furtherance of their activities as MPs.

This will necessitate liaison with Councillors, the Local Authority, public agencies, community and business organisations, individual constituents and journalists. The post holder will be expected to co-ordinate with existing staff on issues which arise from case work, to organise events, to produce MPs’ reports with desk top publishing and to provide general support for the MPs in their constituency activities.

Have you got what it takes to become a professional political campaigner? A number of exciting opportunities have arisen for people to join the Labour Party’s highly successful Trainee Organiser Scheme this summer.

During this 10-month training program successful applicants will undergo an intensive combination of on the job and classroom based training. Trainees will be full time employees of the party for the ten months of the scheme and then may have the opportunity to work as full time Labour Party organisers. Trainees will be based in Labour Party offices across the country.

With experience of, or involvement in, campaign organising within the Labour Party or a similar organisation, you will be self motivated, enthusiastic, committed and naturally, have a good knowledge of the party and its policies. We would like to see excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and you will be willing to travel to attend placements and training.

***PARLIAMENTARY ASSISTANT TO VERA BAIRD QC, MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT FOR REDCAR***

This post is fulltime (36 hours per week – preferably worked Monday to Thursday) and begins on Monday 11th October 2004.

The successful candidate will be the only staff member of our team working at Westminster. She or he will be able to demonstrate sympathy for the Labour movement and good political judgement, have excellent organisational and administrative skills, be self reliant, self motivated and able to work calmly, quickly and accurately under pressure. A high standard of written and oral communication and speed of comprehension will be required at all times. The successful candidate will build a close working relationship with those members
of our team based in the constituency as the two offices work effectively and constructively together on a day to day basis.

Duties will include full responsibility for the MP’s busy parliamentary diary, assisting with research and providing briefing as and when required, drafting press releases, dealing with press enquiries and full responsibility for the effective organisation of the London office correspondence, filing systems and daily office functioning.

Previous experience of similar parliamentary duties would be helpful but is not a requirement to be eligible for interview. A candidate without relevant working experience, if successful in their application, would be required to learn basic parliamentary systems and protocol before beginning the job. A short period of shadowing the present Parliamentary Assistant will also be a requirement for the successful candidate, in order to achieve an effective handover of responsibilities.

This post requires flexibility and the ability to adapt quickly and
appropriately to the duties of the MP who is an active backbencher with a breadth of political interests, All Party Group membership, committee
responsibilities and an association with many NGOs. Key political areas of interest include women, pensions, criminal justice issues and economic regeneration in the North East.
