Somewhat overdue, on the last day before recess, the government published its child poverty strategy. It was released to much fanfare from Nick Clegg about his commitment to improving social mobility.

Last week’s budget didn’t offer much. Extensive damage had already been done to family budgets in the 2010 emergency budget and spending review, which the latest budget did little to repair. Instead, the chancellor claimed he was opening Britain for business.

I’m at a loss to understand why the government’s pressing on with its ill-thought-out health policy. Just about everyone, from the BMA, GPs and the Patients’ Association, to the Liberal Democrat spring conference and a goodly number of Tory MPs, thinks Andrew Lansley’s plans are dangerous and wrong.
